Soft Dog Crate

A dog will always find its way home, so they say. They are den creatures, easy to bury and place themselves in a warm environment, but more than that, they are home bodies. Like humans, they are easily attached to a place that has made an impression of security and love. Most dogs are quickly attached to their dog crates and kennels when their navigational system equate as a place where they feel the most assurance.

There are several dog homes in the market depending on the necessity of both dog and owner. Wire crates are probably the most common type found and are also considered the most durable. For chronic chewers and developing puppies, these are highly recommended. It is stable, adjustable, foldable, portable and visible. It can also be added with bottom paddings or side paddings for extra comfort. When buying wired cages, it is important to check the finishing. Those which do not come from good manufacturers will tend to have unsoldered areas harmful to newborns and small dogs. Check also the paint finishing of these crates. Reliable manufacturers will give assurance that no harmful chemicals have been included in the paint so that it will not be ingested by the dog. Still, it better to be safe and buy unpainted wire crates like those made up of stainless steel. These will not corrode as easily as powder-coated crates.

Plastic dog crates and kennels are lighter and more convenient to carry for owners. They can be used for air travel too. Always watch out for the necessary seals which come with federally approved airline crates and kennels. Plastic crates are also more aesthetically pleasing than their wired counterparts. They come in all forms of designs and colors meant for the savvy traveler. It can also be used for home containment and crate training. Again, the material should be checked if no harmful chemicals are placed in that can be chewed or ingested by the dog. If in doubt, always ask veterinarians what the recommended brand for plastic dog crates and kennels are in the market.

Canvas crates or better known as soft crates are more comfortable alternatives to plastic or wire although they are less durable and stable than the two. They are crates which come in soft material or padding and even has extra pads on the bottom for the dog’s greater relief when traveling. Not all dogs will like being in a soft dog crate though. Large active dogs and puppies who are teething should not use canvas crates especially while in transit. They can easily break free from the frames. For more docile dogs and avid traveling owners, these are suggested as they are easily portable and foldable for keeps. They are also simple to clean since most are machine washable or can be pressure washed if newly stained.

When letting dogs try out their new homes, always be patient. Do not lock them up or force them to enter. A dog should always associate their crates and kennels with home. Let them smell around first and gently push them towards the opening. Place their things like a toy or chew bone inside as a sign of ownership. Eventually, dogs will associate the crate as a place they will eventually go home to.
